Bassey scores as Fulham beat Burnley in five-goal thriller

Calvin Bassey was on the scoresheet as Fulham secured a thrilling 3–2 away victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, piling further misery on the Clarets and easing Fulham’s relegation fears.

Bassey’s first-half header proved decisive in a contest that saw Fulham claim their first league win at Turf Moor since 1951, while Burnley slipped to a seventh straight Premier League defeat.

The result also lifted Fulham seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Fulham started brightly and took an early lead through Emile Smith Rowe, who capitalised on a defensive mix-up from a corner.

Harry Wilson’s low delivery caused confusion at the near post, allowing Smith Rowe to tap home after Burnley failed to clear their lines.

Burnley responded in the 21st minute when Lesley Ugochukwu restored parity. The midfielder was released by Josh Cullen and calmly finished beyond Bernd Leno, with his effort bouncing in off the post to register Burnley’s first goal from open play in several weeks.

The visitors, however, regained the advantage before the break following another lapse in Burnley’s defence. After a corner was only partially cleared, Antonee Robinson picked out Wilson on the left flank, and his cross was met by Bassey, who nodded in from close range to put Fulham back in front.

Burnley pressed after the interval and went close to an equaliser when Smith Rowe’s short backpass nearly proved costly, but Leno reacted sharply to deny Jacob Bruun Larsen.

The Fulham goalkeeper later produced another important save to keep out Armando Broja as the hosts pushed forward.

Fulham eventually sealed the win just before the hour mark. A quick counterattack saw Samuel Chukwueze find Wilson inside the penalty area, and the winger finished clinically for his eighth goal of the season, extending Fulham’s lead.

Burnley reduced the deficit late on when substitute Oliver Sonne converted from close range after Quilindschy Hartman’s cross, but the comeback fell short.

Boos greeted the final whistle at Turf Moor as Fulham celebrated a rare and historic away success.

The defeat leaves Burnley still without a league win since October, while Fulham continue to pull clear of danger, inspired by Bassey’s goal and an all-round team performance.
