Anambra govt unveils plan to build 10,000 homes for workers

The Anambra State Government has announced plans to construct 10,000 low-cost housing units to ease accommodation challenges facing civil servants and low-income earners in the state.

The housing project will be located at Isiagu in Awka South Local Government Area and will be executed through a Public–Private Partnership with real estate developers.

Speaking during a budget defence session with the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Appropriation, the Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Paully Onyeka, disclosed that Governor Chukwuma Soludo had approved the project some time ago but implementation was delayed by administrative and partnership-related challenges.

According to him, those issues have now been fully resolved, clearing the way for construction to begin.

“We are set to deliver the 10,000 low-cost housing units for civil servants and low-income earners,” Onyeka said.

“The project was initially stalled due to some last-minute bottlenecks, but those challenges have been addressed by the state government.”

He explained that construction activities would commence promptly, taking advantage of favourable weather conditions.

“Now that conditions are right, there is nothing standing in the way. The private sector partners under the PPP arrangement are fully on board, and the project will take off without further delay,” he added.

Onyeka noted that the governor’s focus on massive road construction across the state has opened up previously inaccessible areas, making large-scale housing development more feasible.

“The administration’s infrastructure drive, particularly road expansion, has made new locations attractive for estate development, especially in the hinterlands,” he said.

The commissioner also highlighted the broader role of the Ministry of Housing in the state’s development agenda, stressing that the ministry provides technical support for several government construction projects beyond housing.

“Our responsibilities go beyond residential buildings. Even when projects are under other ministries or agencies, we are involved in their execution to ensure quality and value for money,” Onyeka stated.

He cited ongoing and completed projects such as upgrades at Ekwueme Square, renovations of the Commissioners’ Quarters, and the construction of a trauma centre at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka.
