Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has declared his support for Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs qualifiers.
Having failed to secure automatic qualification, the Super Eagles now have another chance to reach the global showpiece through the playoffs route.
Nigeria finished among the four best third-placed teams and will compete with Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo for Africa’s final ticket.
Eric Chelle’s team will face Gabon in the semi-final, with the winner set to meet either Cameroon or DR Congo in the decisive final clash.
Ahead of the crucial fixtures, Rohr, whose Benin side lost 4-0 to the Super Eagles in their last Group C game in Uyo, praised his former team for their strength and quality.
“Super Eagles have so many high level players and strikers, we tried against them but we could not do it,” Rohr told Brila FM.
“We beat them during the qualifiers and it’s a result we were proud of but I will be supporting the Super Eagles in the playoffs.”
Rohr, who guided Nigeria to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and a bronze medal finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, said he remains fond of the team he once managed.
