The Kebbi State Police Command says it has rescued six people who were abducted during a recent attack on communities in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were freed unharmed after police operatives and local vigilantes engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel on Saturday.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the state, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday, noting that the rescue followed swift action based on credible intelligence.
According to him, “A group of armed bandits invaded Ukuhu, Tungar Wazga, and Unguwar Chiroma villages in the late hours of November 2, kidnapping ten residents.
Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer in Danko mobilised a combined team of officers and vigilante members and pursued the suspects.”
He explained that the security team intercepted the criminals at Marina, a border area close to Zamfara State, where a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued.
“The pressure from the operatives forced the bandits to abandon six of their captives and escape into the forest, likely with gunshot wounds,” the police spokesperson said.
The rescued victims — identified as Abubakar B. Abubakar (25), Nasiru Magawata (18), Abdul Magawata (15), Buhari Ukuhu (17), Kamalu Magawata (12), and Naziru Magawata (11) — have been reunited with their families after medical checks.
However, four of the abducted persons are still missing, and efforts to locate them are continuing.
Commissioner of Police, Bello M. Sani, commended the officers and vigilantes for what he described as “bravery and rapid coordination.”
He said: “The Command remains fully committed to protecting the lives and property of citizens. We urge communities to continue supporting security agencies with timely and reliable information so we can collectively curb crime.”
The statement added that search operations are ongoing to track the fleeing kidnappers and rescue the remaining victims.
