The National Emergency Management Agency has teamed up with the Nigeria Red Cross Society to distribute relief items to households displaced by recent flooding in Ramin Kura Internally Displaced Persons Camp, located in Sokoto South Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The relief distribution, which took place over the weekend, is part of the Red Cross’ Flood Risk Reduction and Recovery Initiative funded by the Government of Italy.
NEMA disclosed the intervention in a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Sunday, noting that its officials were directly involved in the exercise to ensure transparency.
“Our field team participated in the distribution of non-food items to internally displaced persons affected by the recent flood disaster in Ramin Kura IDP Camp,” the agency stated.
The agency explained that its staff worked alongside Red Cross officials to supervise and coordinate the process.
“The exercise was conducted in a transparent, fair, and hitch-free manner,” it added.
NEMA said it will continue to collaborate with local and international humanitarian organizations to support communities impacted by natural disasters.
“We remain committed to working with our partners to cushion the effects of disasters on affected households and restore stability,” the statement noted.
The recent flooding, caused by prolonged heavy rainfall, displaced several families in the Sokoto metropolis and surrounding areas, prompting emergency assessments and intervention efforts.
NEMA had earlier conducted an evaluation of flood-affected communities in Binji and Wamako Local Government Areas, under the directive of the Head of its Sokoto Operations Office, Aliyu Shehu Kafindangi.
The agency said the flooding had severe consequences on the livelihoods of residents, crops and shelter, thereby necessitating continuous recovery support.
“This intervention is another step toward restoring hope and normalcy to affected families,” the agency concluded.
