Legendary Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, has taken a swipe at Barcelona’s maturity level following their 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Real Madrid in Sunday’s pulsating El Clásico showdown at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The highly anticipated clash once again highlighted the gulf in composure and physicality between the two Spanish giants, according to the former Premier League boss.
Speaking on beIN Sports, Wenger did not hold back in his assessment, describing the encounter as “men against boys” in several areas of the pitch.
His remarks came after a match where Real Madrid showed greater defensive discipline and tactical balance, while Barcelona’s youthful side struggled to cope with the intensity of their hosts.
The match began brightly for Madrid, with summer signing Kylian Mbappé opening the scoring in the first half after a slick attacking move.
Barcelona responded through Fermin López, who grabbed the equaliser and briefly reignited hopes of a comeback.
However, Jude Bellingham’s close-range finish late in the game restored Madrid’s lead and ultimately sealed the victory.
“Xabi Alonso balanced his team well today,” Wenger said on beIN Sports. “Overall, I would say that it was a bit like men against boys in some departments. The defensive performance of Real Madrid was much stronger than the defensive performance of Barcelona.”
Wenger’s comments underline a growing narrative surrounding Barcelona’s current project under Xavi Hernández, a side filled with young talents but still learning how to handle big-match pressure.
Meanwhile, Madrid’s experience and composure once again proved decisive, keeping them five points clear at the top of La Liga after ten rounds.
