LASAA probes staff over alleged payment fraud

The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency has launched an internal investigation into allegations that one of its staff members used a personal bank account to collect payments from clients for signage-related services.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the agency described the allegation, which first appeared on social media, as a serious breach of financial and ethical conduct if confirmed to be true.

“The Agency views this allegation with utmost seriousness and wishes to state unequivocally that such actions, if verified, are contrary to the established financial and ethical procedures governing transactions within LASAA and the Lagos State Civil Service,” the statement read in part.

The management said it acted immediately on the directive of the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, identifying the staff involved and directing them to report to LASAA headquarters for investigation and disciplinary action in line with public service rules.

LASAA reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, warning that all payments for its services must be made strictly through official government channels.

“We appreciate the vigilance of members of the public who bring such matters to our attention. The Agency assures all stakeholders and clients that necessary corrective measures will be taken to uphold public trust and the integrity of our processes,” it added.

The controversy began when a social media user identified as @Bhadmoz (TrueBlue) on X (formerly Twitter) alleged that LASAA had been using a personal bank account to receive payments for signage services.

The post, which tagged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other state officials, also claimed that customers were issued receipts that did not match the actual amounts paid.

Reacting to the allegation, Commissioner Wahab confirmed via his X handle that the individual involved was indeed a LASAA staff member and had been ordered to face disciplinary measures.

“The Lagos State Government has zero tolerance for unethical behaviour in the civil service. Any public servant found engaging in such acts will face strict sanctions,” Wahab stated.

LASAA, an agency under the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, is responsible for regulating and managing outdoor advertising and signage displays across Lagos State.

The agency said updates on the investigation would be shared with the public as the process continues.
