Abia ready to host 63rd WAEC national council meeting — Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has assured that the state is fully prepared to host the 63rd Nigeria National Committee Meeting of the West African Examinations Council, scheduled to take place from November 17 to 21, 2025, in Umuahia.

Governor Otti gave the assurance on Tuesday when he received a delegation from WAEC, led by the council’s Abia State Branch Controller, Mrs. Mary Chima, at the Government House in Umuahia.

He expressed gratitude to WAEC for choosing Abia as the host state, describing the decision as a recognition of his administration’s commitment to improving education.

“We thank WAEC for the choice of Abia. We already have your letter and have begun making necessary arrangements,” Otti said.

“We consider it a great privilege to host this year’s event, and I can assure you that we will put everything in place to make it a memorable one,” he added.

The governor emphasized that the choice of Abia reflected the state’s strong education policies and achievements, noting that his administration remains dedicated to advancing learning and teacher welfare.

In furtherance of this, Otti directed the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, to reopen the recruitment portal for another batch of 4,000 teachers to strengthen the education workforce in the state.

Earlier, Mrs. Chima commended the Otti-led government for its unwavering support to the education sector and for maintaining high standards in the conduct of WAEC examinations.

“Your Excellency, the choice of Abia State among the five Eastern states is a recognition of your administration’s exceptional commitment to educational excellence, discipline, and reform,” Chima stated.

“The WAEC Nigeria National Council Meeting is the highest policy-making body of the council. It brings together Commissioners of Education, Heads of WAEC Offices, and senior national officers to deliberate on policies, review performance, and make far-reaching decisions that shape educational standards across the country,” she explained.

She further noted that Abia’s consistent top performance in WAEC examinations nationwide is a reflection of the government’s emphasis on discipline, ethics, and collaboration with the council.

The 63rd WAEC Nigeria National Council Meeting is expected to attract education stakeholders, state commissioners, and examination administrators from across the country.
