The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has announced a new policy limiting the maximum fine for all traffic offences in the state to ₦10,000.
The governor made the declaration during a town hall meeting with transport stakeholders at the Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Onitsha, on Tuesday, describing the decision as part of his administration’s effort to make governance more inclusive and people-oriented.
According to a statement by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, Soludo said the new measure, which takes effect from October 14, 2025, was introduced to cushion the financial hardship faced by transporters and motorists amid rising living costs.
He said, “Starting from October 14, 2025, the maximum fine payable for any traffic offence in Anambra State will be ₦10,000, regardless of the nature of the offence. This is part of our commitment to reducing the economic burden on our people and ensuring fairness in traffic enforcement.”
The governor added that while law enforcement is essential for maintaining order, it must be balanced with compassion.
“We are partners in progress,” Soludo said. “My administration will continue to promote fairness and accountability. A special task force will be established to clamp down on illegal tax collectors, and all cash collected must be remitted directly to government coffers.”
He also revealed plans to strengthen the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) to improve traffic control and designate proper bus stops across the state.
Soludo commended the transport unions for their contributions to the state’s economy, noting that their partnership was vital to achieving his administration’s development agenda.
“From the records available, the kilometres of roads we have constructed and rehabilitated within less than four years are unmatched. This is for you — the hardworking people of Anambra. What we are doing now is just the beginning,” he stated.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Transportation, Patricia Igwebuike, praised the governor for his inclusive leadership, saying the transport sector touches every household in the state.
“We have the numbers because transportation connects every home. The governor’s vision aligns with road, maritime, and aviation development under a unified blue economy framework,” she said.
Other speakers, including the Managing Director of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, Celestine Anere; Managing Director of ARTMA, Emeka Okonkwo; and Managing Director of Transport Company of Anambra State, Chike Obiakor, lauded Soludo’s reforms, citing achievements such as the elimination of touting and the digitisation of tax payment.
They pledged to continue supporting the administration, describing themselves as “Soludo’s foot soldiers” who would ensure his re-election in the upcoming November 8 governorship election.
