Tinubu mourns evangelist Uma Ukpai

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Dr Uma Ukpai, describing him as “one of God’s generals” who lived a life of faith, service, and compassion.

In a statement issued from the State House on Monday, the President said the late clergyman, who died at the age of 80, was not only a preacher but also “an anointed crusader of the faith, filled with fire and ice for the gospel and restoring humanity to discipline, love, and good neighbourliness.”

Tinubu recalled that Dr Ukpai played a pivotal role in the revival movement that swept across Nigeria and parts of Africa in the 1980s, describing him as a “firebrand” who left a remarkable imprint on the Christian community.

“I recall his Greater Ibadan for Christ crusade in 1982 and the Greater Lagos for Christ crusade in 1985, two phenomenal events in proportion and impact,” the President noted.

Born in Asaga, Ohafia, Abia State, Ukpai endured several challenges in his early years but remained steadfast in his divine calling.

According to the President, “God had his purpose well defined. He obeyed the divine call and impacted generations with his ministry.”

Tinubu also praised the late evangelist’s efforts toward promoting unity and peace across different faiths and communities, describing him as “a builder, building men and bridges linking different faiths, people, tongues, and tribes.”

The President highlighted Ukpai’s humanitarian contributions, noting that “he set up many charities, schools, and hospitals for the underprivileged.”

“Dr Ukpai has fulfilled his divine mission and has gone to be with the Lord. He fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith,” Tinubu said.

While consoling the family of the deceased, the President prayed for God’s comfort and strength for his widow, Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, their children, and members of his ministry.

“I encourage them to find solace in the great legacy of this beloved servant of God,” he added.

Dr Uma Ukpai was also one of the founding members of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and was widely regarded as a leading figure in Nigeria’s evangelical movement.
