Vinícius shines, Mbappe injured as Madrid beat 10-man Villarreal

Vinícius Júnior inspired Real Madrid back to the summit of La Liga with a brace in a commanding 3-1 victory over 10-man Villarreal, though the win was marred by Kylian Mbappé’s injury shortly after scoring Madrid’s third of the night.

Thibaut Courtois proved crucial early on, making a vital save to deny Tani Oluwaseyi in a one-on-one just before half-time.

That stop set the stage for Madrid’s dominant second half, where Vinícius broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart, his effort taking a deflection off Santi Comesaña to wrong-foot goalkeeper Arnau Tenas.

The Brazilian added a second from the penalty spot in the 69th minute after being brought down by Rafa Marín, confidently slotting under Tenas to double Madrid’s advantage.

Villarreal briefly threatened a comeback when Georges Mikautadze found the net via the post, but their hopes were quickly dashed as Santiago Mouriño received a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Vinícius.

Moments later, substitute Brahim Díaz unselfishly teed up Mbappé to make it 3-1, extending the Frenchman’s incredible scoring streak to nine consecutive games for club and country, the longest of his career.

However, the celebration was short-lived as Mbappé was forced off with an ankle injury shortly after finding the target, replaced by Rodrygo.

The win moves Real Madrid two points clear of Barcelona, who visit Sevilla on Sunday, and provides the perfect response to their 5-2 derby humbling against Atlético Madrid a week earlier.

Vinícius’ dazzling performance and Courtois’ first-half heroics stood out in a night of mixed emotions for Madrid — a return to the top, but with concern hanging over their star forward’s fitness.
