President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of several persons in a boat mishap that occurred on Tuesday along the River Niger in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The ill-fated boat was said to be conveying traders from Ibaji to Ilushi Market in neighbouring Edo State when it capsized, leaving many dead.
Confirming the tragedy, Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the accident as “a dark day for the state,” noting that at least 26 people had been confirmed dead.
Reacting to the development, President Tinubu, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the incident was both “shocking and unfortunate.”
“The victims were hardworking traders embarking on their legitimate quest to make a decent living. Their untimely deaths are a huge loss not only to their families but to the entire community,” the President said.
Tinubu also praised the swift response of emergency teams at the scene but urged authorities to do more to prevent a repeat.
“I commend the first responders who moved quickly to assist survivors. However, I call on federal, state, and local emergency agencies to intensify efforts to support those affected,” he said.
The President further appealed to boat operators across the country to prioritise safety over profit.
“Water transport is vital for many communities, but safety must never be compromised. Operators must put lives first before financial considerations,” he added.
Tinubu offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
