Rivers govt cancels independence day parade

The Rivers State Government has called off the parade earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Special Services Bureau, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Sir Sampson Friday Dede.

“This is to inform the public that, in line with the pronouncement of the Federal Government, the parade scheduled to hold at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, October 1, in commemoration of the 65th Independence Day in the state has been cancelled,” the statement read.

Dede added that the government regrets any inconvenience the cancellation might cause residents.

“We sincerely apologise to members of the public who had looked forward to participating in the parade,” he said, stressing that the state was only aligning with the decision of the Federal Government to shelve the celebration.

The Federal Government had on Monday announced the suspension of the Independence Day parade, citing undisclosed reasons.
