The Lagos State Police Command has charged a senior member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as Shamelon, for the alleged killing of a dispatch rider.
Oladiti, 55, was brought before Ebute Metta Magistrate Court 2 on Tuesday following his arrest over accusations of assault and murder.
According to the Command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, the suspect allegedly assaulted the dispatch rider on Lagos Island, hitting him with a helmet and his fists, which left the victim with severe injuries.
Police records also revealed that Oladiti had been previously reported for another violent incident on August 28, 2025.
The PUNCH confirmed his arrest on Saturday, linking him to two separate cases on Lagos Island, one of murder and another of assault that left a victim gravely injured.
In a statement posted on X, Oluseyi disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, intervened after a protest erupted at Sandgrouse Market, where sympathisers of the deceased attacked Oladiti’s office.
He wrote, “Following news of the death, sympathisers of the deceased mobilised and staged a violent protest at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, setting two motorcycles belonging to the suspect ablaze and causing unrest in the area.”
Detailing the case further, the police spokesperson explained, “On 17th September 2025 at about 3:00pm, the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and fists to inflict serious bodily injury (on him). The victim (dispatch rider) was rushed to the hospital, placed on oxygen, and is currently receiving medical treatment.”
Police also connected Oladiti to another fatal assault reported weeks earlier.
Oluseyi added, “On 18th September 2025, at about 11:00 am, another complaint was lodged against the same suspect in connection with an incident that occurred on 28th August 2025.”
The statement noted, “During the altercation, the suspect allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face, inflicting severe injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim was confirmed dead by a doctor on 17th September 2025. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.”
