Police tighten security over Ladoja’s coronation as Olubadan

The Oyo State Police Command has issued a stern caution against any form of public disorder, including unauthorised processions and movements in Ibadan, ahead of the coronation of former governor of the state, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The ceremony is scheduled for Friday at the historic Mapo Hall in the state capital. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, in a statement on Thursday, the Command has rolled out comprehensive security arrangements to guarantee a smooth and safe celebration.

Ladoja, who was Governor of Oyo State between 2003 and 2007, is stepping into the revered stool following the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on July 7, 2025.

Highlighting the significance of the event, Osifeso described it as a cultural and historical milestone expected to attract dignitaries and guests from across Nigeria and beyond.

He said, “In light of the expected turnout, the state Police Command, in conjunction with relevant sister services, has perfected strategies for the execution of extensive security measures.

“These measures will encompass confidence-building patrols, heightened surveillance operations, and intelligence-led stop-and-search initiatives across the length and breadth of the state.

“Special emphasis will be placed on all entry and exit points in and out of the state, with particular attention directed towards the coronation venue.

“This includes public parks, train stations, and the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan.”

The PPRO also disclosed that the state government’s organising committee had notified the public of traffic diversions around Mapo Hall, starting from 7 a.m. on Friday.

Restricted routes include Beere junction leading to Mapo Hall, Born Photo junction to Oja’ba, Idi-Arere junction to Oja’ba, and Itamerin junction towards Mapo Hall.

The Command urged commuters to plan alternative routes to ease possible disruptions.

“Furthermore, the Command issues a stern warning against any forms of public disorder, including unauthorised processions and movements within the metropolis before, during, and after the event,” the statement added.
