The Joint Action Committee, of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions has prolonged the strike ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government by an additional two weeks.
The unions had last week threatened to embark on industrial action over what they described as “unresolved welfare concerns,” particularly the alleged lopsided disbursement of earned allowances and the non-payment of outstanding benefits.
In a statement signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the JAC explained that the decision followed a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Education, including the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, on September 19, 2025.
“The leadership of JAC of NASU and SSANU, arising from a meeting held on Monday, 22nd September, 2025, decided to keep you updated on the current status of our agitations forwarded for resolution to the Federal Government,” the statement noted.
According to the unions, the government constituted a joint consultative committee to deliberate on the issues, but the talks yielded no concrete resolution.
“The meeting’s deliberations focused on our demands, but concrete resolutions of our requests have not been met, necessitating the continuation of discussions,” the JAC explained.
As a result, the ultimatum has now been extended to allow the government more time to act.
“In view of this, the JAC of NASU and SSANU has resolved to extend the ultimatum by an additional two weeks, effective today,” the letter read.
The unions warned that they would not hesitate to embark on industrial action if their grievances remain unaddressed after the new deadline.
“This extension provides the government with an opportunity to initiate the requisite processes to address our demands. If the government fails to do the needful within this extended period, the JAC will summarily proceed with a series of legitimate industrial actions upon expiration of the extension,” the statement concluded.
