UNN restricts social events to 6pm after student’s stabbing

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has banned all social activities on campus beyond 6:00 p.m. following the tragic killing of a guest during a students’ event.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Inya Egwu, on Sunday.

Egwu explained that the restriction became necessary after the death of a businessman, identified as Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, who was stabbed during a bonfire event organised by students of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies on September 12.

“Management has directed that henceforth, all social activities must end strictly by 6:00 p.m. and must be conducted under the close supervision of the University Security Unit,” the statement read.

“No social event of any kind will be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m.”

The university management blamed the violence on miscreants from a neighbouring community who allegedly infiltrated the students’ gathering and instigated the attack.

“It is unfortunate that a peaceful event was hijacked by outsiders, leading to the loss of life,” the institution added.

Assuring the university community of safety, the management said: “UNN remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors, and will continue to take every necessary measure to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.”
