The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, has warned of thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday, urging citizens to take precautionary measures against possible hazards.
In its weather outlook issued on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet projected that northern states such as Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba would experience isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall on Monday morning.
The agency also cautioned that flash floods could occur in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe.
“For motorists, it is safer to avoid driving during periods of heavy downpour. We also advise farmers not to apply fertiliser or pesticides shortly before rainfall, as this may result in nutrient loss,” the agency stated.
The central region, including Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory, and Benue, is expected to record cloudy skies with sunshine intervals on Monday morning, followed by thunderstorms later in the day.
In the south, NiMet predicted morning showers in Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, with more widespread rains as the day progresses.
On Tuesday, cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms are expected across Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa, while later in the day, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, and Kebbi will likely experience thunderstorms.
“The weather outlook shows significant rainfall across the country, especially in the north and central regions,” NiMet noted.
“Residents should fasten loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and avoid sheltering under trees to minimise risks.”
For Wednesday, the forecast indicated cloudy conditions with slim chances of rain in Sokoto and Zamfara in the morning, before thunderstorms spread to Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto later in the day. The central states, including Kogi, Kwara, Niger, and the FCT, will also experience showers.
NiMet also appealed to airline operators to ensure they obtain updated, airport-specific weather information for effective flight planning.
The agency urged Nigerians to keep track of weather developments via its official website (www.nimet.gov.ng) and other official channels.
