Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has approved the appointment of Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer as the new Head of the State Civil Service.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Yenagoa by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah.
Dr. Sawyer, who until now served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, succeeds Mrs. Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, who bowed out of service on August 31 after attaining the mandatory retirement age.
Governor Diri described Sawyer as a seasoned professional with the right blend of experience and leadership qualities to steer the state civil service.
“The Bayelsa Civil Service deserves a leader with competence and vision, and I am confident Dr. Sawyer will bring his wealth of knowledge to this new responsibility,” the governor said.
Born on May 14, 1970, in Odi community, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, Sawyer began his career in the state civil service on June 8, 1998, as a medical officer.
He attended Town School, Okrika, and Okrika Grammar School in Rivers State before obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Port Harcourt in 1996.
He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Lagos in 2000 and later secured a Part 2 Fellowship in Public Health from the National Postgraduate Medical College, Lagos, in 2010.
The appointee has also defended his dissertation for a PhD in Clinical Sciences and Public Health at the Niger Delta University. He is a member of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies.
Expressing gratitude for his appointment, Dr. Sawyer pledged to uphold professionalism and efficiency in the state workforce.
“This is a call to greater service, and I assure His Excellency and the people of Bayelsa that I will work tirelessly to strengthen the civil service and ensure it continues to deliver effectively,” he said.
