Rooney influenced my Everton move – Grealish

Everton’s latest signing, Jack Grealish, has revealed that a conversation with club legend Wayne Rooney was a decisive factor in his move to Goodison Park.

The Toffees secured Grealish’s signature in a deal reportedly worth £300,000 ($402,000) per week, just days before they kick off their Premier League season away to Leeds on August 18.

The 28-year-old joins Everton with a glittering CV, boasting three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, a Champions League crown, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

He becomes David Moyes’ sixth summer recruit, following the arrivals of Charly Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, Mark Travers, Adam Aznou, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Grealish explained the sentimental value behind his shirt choice and the influence Rooney had on his decision.

“There is a reason for (choosing number 18). There were other numbers but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here.

“So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point.

“I spoke to Wayne (Rooney) before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the number 18, so I hope he’s happy as well!”
