The Oyo State Emergency Management Agency has issued a warning to residents living in flood-prone communities to brace for heavy downpours and potential flooding, following alerts from the state’s Flood Early Warning System.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Ibadan, the state capital, the agency’s Administrative Secretary, Ojuolape Busari, highlighted that the areas most likely to be affected are situated in the eastern and northeastern parts of Ibadan.
“Reports from our flood monitoring systems show that communities in Lagelu Local Government Area, especially around Iyana Offa and the eastern parts of Moniya, as well as areas along the Ibadan-Ife expressway, are expected to witness intense rainfall,” Busari said.
She further pointed out that parts of Egbeda LGA and neighboring communities bordering Lagelu are also at risk.
“The rainfall will not be uniform, but the areas mentioned are particularly vulnerable today,” she added.
The warning extends to other major parts of Ibadan metropolis including IITA, Ibadan Airport, the University of Ibadan, Ojoo, Akobo, Basorun, Gate, Challenge, and Ring Road. Sections of Akinyele and Oluyole Local Government Areas are also expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall.
According to Busari, the alert is part of proactive efforts to minimize the potential impact of flooding, especially in densely populated areas. She emphasized the readiness of the agency and its partners to respond swiftly to emergencies.
“We are fully prepared to intervene where necessary,” she assured. “Government agencies, volunteer groups, and civil society organizations are on standby to assist affected individuals and communities.”
Busari urged residents in the vulnerable areas to begin taking precautionary steps, stressing the importance of timely action. “Discretion is the better part of valour,” she noted, appealing for vigilance and cooperation from the public.
The state government advised residents to stay informed, avoid flooded areas, and report emergency situations to the appropriate authorities as heavy rainfall continues in the coming days.
