Medical doctors under the Federal Capital Territory branch of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners have suspended their three-month industrial action following intervention by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
In a statement signed by the association’s Chairman, Dr. Okoreaffia Ogbonnaya, the doctors confirmed that the strike was called off with immediate effect.
They credited the minister’s leadership and commitment for the breakthrough in their lingering welfare issues.
“We sincerely commend the Honourable Minister for his prompt and decisive intervention,” Ogbonnaya stated. “His dedication to resolving our members’ welfare concerns, including the commencement of payments, has restored confidence and morale among healthcare workers across the FCT.”
The association embarked on the strike three months ago, citing unpaid salaries, allowances, and unresolved administrative grievances affecting members employed by the Area Council Service Commission.
Acknowledging the partial payments already made, the association expressed optimism for continued dialogue to ensure that all outstanding entitlements are fully addressed.
“In view of the progress made so far, we hereby announce the immediate suspension of our industrial action,” the statement continued.
“We urge all our members to resume duties immediately as we maintain constructive engagement with relevant authorities.”
While suspending the strike, the association reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy for improved working conditions and better healthcare delivery in the FCT.
“We remain committed to working collaboratively with the FCT Administration and Area Council Chairmen to ensure prompt payment of all pending salaries and allowances,” the statement concluded.
“We welcome ongoing efforts towards building a more responsive and sustainable healthcare system for the residents of the capital territory.”
