Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has called on Nigerians to actively engage in the ongoing constitutional review process, stressing that their input is vital for shaping reforms that reflect the collective aspirations of the people.
Kalu made the call on Saturday during the Constitution Review Public Hearing held in Owerri, Imo State, which serves as the zonal centre for both Imo and Abia States.
Addressing participants, Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, emphasized that the review of the 1999 Constitution is not a one-time event but an evolving process that requires consistent public engagement.
“This is your Constitution. This is your moment,” Kalu said. “You are not just observers; you are stakeholders and co-authors of Nigeria’s next constitutional chapter. Do not hold back your ideas, your criticisms, or your aspirations.”
He encouraged citizens to present memoranda, petitions, and constructive feedback, noting that their voices would influence the final amendments considered by the National Assembly and ultimately signed into law.
“I urge you to hold us accountable. Ask the tough questions. Demand transparency. Insist on fairness. The future of our democracy depends on it,” he stated.
Kalu reiterated that the strength of Nigeria’s democracy lies not only in the decisions of lawmakers but also in the active participation of the people.
“Your robust contributions will ensure that the Constitution we produce is not just a legal document, but a social contract — one that reflects the hopes and values of all Nigerians,” he added.
Highlighting the scope of the ongoing review, Kalu revealed that the committee is currently working on 87 prioritised amendment bills, each addressing critical issues confronting the country. He urged citizens of Abia and Imo to engage fully, especially on matters that directly impact their lives.
The Deputy Speaker also commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting the constitutional reform process and for fostering an environment that promotes collaboration between the executive and the legislature.
“We are grateful for President Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to institutional strengthening and inclusive growth,” Kalu noted. “His reform-driven agenda and respect for the legislature’s role have paved the way for this historic constitutional review.”
Kalu concluded by encouraging Nigerians to rise above political and regional divisions and embrace the opportunity to shape a just, equitable, and progressive nation.
“Let us build a Nigeria where justice, equity, and progress are not just ideals, but everyday realities,” he said.
