Nigeria’s J’Tigress pulled off a sensational 98–93 victory over China in their opening Group B clash at the 2025 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, which tipped off on Saturday in the Czech Republic.
Making just their second appearance in the tournament after debuting in 2011, the young Nigerian team showed remarkable resilience after falling behind early.
China took the first quarter 24-16, but Nigeria responded fiercely, edging the second quarter 22-20.
The momentum stayed with the West Africans as they dominated the third quarter 23-16 and sealed the win with a high-scoring final quarter, 32-28.
In the group’s other fixture, Canada delivered a commanding 88-49 win over Portugal, setting the tone for a competitive group stage.
Nigeria will return to the court on Sunday for a tough test against Canada, while China will hope to bounce back against Portugal.
Meanwhile, Mali, the only other African representative and reigning continental champions, were unable to make the trip to the tournament.
Mali earned their World Cup spot by defeating Nigeria in the final of the African qualifiers held in South Africa in September 2024.
They were drawn in Group C alongside France, Brazil, and Australia.
The 2025 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, which began Saturday, is scheduled to conclude on July 20.
