A 70-year-old man, Adamu Yakubu, has been arrested by the police in Jigawa State for allegedly killing his younger sister, 45-year-old Hannatu Hashimu, during a disagreement over family land in Galadanchi village, Dutse Local Government Area.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, July 1, 2025, at around 3:30 p.m., according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Command, Superintendent Shi’isu Adam.
“The Jigawa State Police Command is currently investigating a case of culpable homicide involving a 70-year-old suspect who allegedly stabbed his sister to death with a stick during a heated argument over land inheritance,” SP Adam said.
He explained that what started as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. “In the course of the altercation, the suspect reportedly used a stick to hit the deceased, who later collapsed upon returning to her matrimonial home,” he added.
Family members rushed the victim to the Dutse General Hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
SP Adam confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody and is cooperating with investigators. “The stick used in the assault has been recovered as evidence. The suspect will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” he noted.
Condemning the incident, the police spokesperson urged members of the public to handle family disputes, particularly those related to land or inheritance, through lawful and peaceful means.
“This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the dangers of unresolved family conflicts,” SP Adam emphasized. “We encourage families to seek mediation or legal intervention rather than resorting to violence.”
The Jigawa State Police Command also extended its condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that justice will be served.
