Johnny Evans retires, takes new role at Manchester United

Veteran Manchester United defender, Jonny Evans, has officially hung up his boots, bringing an end to a remarkable two-decade career in professional football.

Evans, who progressed through United’s famed academy system, made 241 senior appearances for the Red Devils.

During his time at Old Trafford, he won three Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, an FA Cup, and two League Cups.

The Northern Ireland international announced his retirement via the Manchester United website, where he also revealed his intentions for the next chapter in football.

“I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead. I’ll be forever indebted to the managers, coaches, staff and, of course, my team-mates, that I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my 20 years in professional football.

“My biggest and most heartfelt thanks must go to the fans who have supported me during every step of the journey. It’s been an honour to be on the pitch and feel your passion home and away; I will be eternally grateful for every ounce of support.

Internationally, Evans was a pillar for Northern Ireland, earning 107 caps and scoring six goals between 2006 and 2024. He captained the national side on 15 occasions.

His international journey began with a stunning 3-2 victory over Spain in Belfast as an 18-year-old, and it fittingly concluded against the same opposition in a 5-1 friendly loss in Mallorca in June 2024.

Evans was part of the historic squad that competed at Euro 2016 in France, Northern Ireland’s first major tournament appearance in three decades.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2023 for his services to football in Northern Ireland.

As he transitions into mentoring the next generation at United, Evans leaves behind a legacy defined by professionalism, leadership, and unwavering commitment to club and country.

After two decades on the pitch, Jonny Evans has stepped into a new chapter at Manchester United, trading his boots for a backroom role following his retirement from professional football.

The Red Devils made the announcement via their official website on Monday, confirming that the 37-year-old former defender will now serve as the club’s new Head of Loans and Pathways.

Evans’ appointment comes shortly after he officially called time on his playing career, a journey that began in United’s academy and saw him rise through the ranks to make his senior debut in 2007.

Following his initial eight-year spell at Old Trafford, Evans moved on to West Bromwich Albion and later Leicester City, where he enjoyed a successful stint before making a surprise return to Manchester United in 2023.

With his UEFA A Licence nearly complete, Evans will now play a key role in shaping the development of young talents, helping them transition into the senior squad.

“I am looking forward to working with the next generation of talented players to support them to reach their potential.

“I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United,” he added.
