The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Ewuare II, has appealed to Nigerian governors to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts in promoting national peace and unity, regardless of their political, religious, or ethnic leanings.
The revered monarch made this appeal on Saturday while receiving governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress at his palace in Benin City, Edo State.
The visit was part of the governors’ courtesy call, and details were shared in a statement by the Oba’s media aide, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, on Sunday.
“I am calling on all the governors to support President Bola Tinubu by projecting peace and unity across the country, irrespective of their political, religious, and ethnic inclinations,” the Oba stated.
He acknowledged the challenges that come with leadership, emphasizing that criticism is a global phenomenon and not unique to Nigeria.
“Everybody knows that there is no one who has been at the Presidential Villa who has not been seriously criticised for one thing or the other,” he said. “Even in America and other developed countries, their presidents are bombarded by the opposition—left, right, and centre. So, we should support our own and do our best.”
The traditional ruler also used the occasion to commend Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for the respect and recognition he has accorded traditional institutions in the state.
“I must commend Governor Okpebholo for the honour and recognition he continues to show to traditional rulers in Edo. It is a sign of leadership that values culture and heritage,” the Oba remarked.
In response, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, thanked the monarch for his prayers and counsel. He assured the royal father that Governor Okpebholo would remain committed to fulfilling his campaign promises, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and poverty alleviation.
“We deeply appreciate Your Majesty’s prayers and wise counsel. Rest assured that Governor Okpebholo is focused on delivering good governance and will not disappoint the people of Edo State,” Uzodimma said.
The visiting delegation included APC senators and federal cabinet members from President Tinubu’s administration, signaling continued collaboration between the federal and state governments.
