Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and suspended House Speaker Martins Amaewhule stood together on Saturday at the burial of Wike’s uncle in Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The joint appearance followed Thursday’s landmark peace meeting at Abuja’s Presidential Villa, where President Bola Tinubu mediated between the warring factions to resolve Rivers’ protracted political crisis.
The closed-door session brought together Wike, Fubara, Amaewhule, and state lawmakers after months of hostilities that prompted Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on March 18, 2025.
“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike had told journalists after the presidential intervention, which temporarily suspended Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and the entire State Assembly.
Saturday’s funeral service marked the first public gathering of the key figures since the truce, offering visual confirmation of the fragile reconciliation in Nigeria’s oil-rich state.
The attendance of these political adversaries at the family event signals potential de-escalation after months of constitutional crises and security concerns that necessitated federal intervention.
