Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk, has made it clear that he has no intentions of returning to the Dutch league to wrap up his professional career.
The 33-year-old defender began his football journey at Eredivisie club Groningen, where he rose through the youth ranks before making a move to Scottish side Celtic in 2013.
In a recent interview with Voetbal International, Van Dijk ruled out the possibility of finishing his playing days in the Netherlands.
“I am very clear about that: I will not return to the Netherlands. I started here, and that was very important to me,” he said.
“I am very clear that I do not want to return to the Eredivisie. I am quite proud of my career so far and I think that finishing in the Eredivisie is not an option.”
Van Dijk’s comments reflect a strong sense of pride in his journey abroad and a firm stance on where he sees his football story concluding, anywhere but his home country.
