Akwa Ibom commissioner resigns after gov’s defection to APC

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Strategy, and Special Duties, Ini Ememobong, has officially stepped down from his role following Governor Umo Eno’s defection to the All Progressives Congress.

Ememobong, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party announced his resignation on Thursday via a Facebook post, citing his principled stance and political alignment.

“In line with the Governor’s instruction that appointees unwilling to move with him to the APC should resign, I have submitted my resignation,” he wrote.

He clarified that his decision to resign is based on personal conviction rather than any disagreement with Governor Eno.

“I cannot follow on that political path due to my long-standing opposition to the APC, which remains firm. My decision reflects my belief in politics rooted in principles,” he added.

Despite his resignation, Ememobong expressed respect for Governor Eno, highlighting the strong personal relationship they share.

“This decision does not affect my bond with His Excellency, who calls me his brother and trusted me with two significant portfolios – Information and Special Duties, and the Ibom Deep Sea Port project,” he noted.

He further appreciated Governor Eno and former Governor Udom Emmanuel for the opportunities they gave him to serve the state.

He also appealed for public understanding over his decision.

“I recognize that not everyone will be pleased with this decision, and to those who are disappointed, I ask for your understanding,” he concluded.
