Former Arsenal midfielder, Emmanuel Petit, has voiced his disapproval of Chelsea’s decision to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town ahead of the new season.
Petit expressed doubts about Delap’s ability to deliver the goals Chelsea need under new manager Enzo Maresca, saying he isn’t convinced the young striker can hit the 25-goal mark next season.
The Blues have reportedly struck a deal to bring the 22-year-old forward to Stamford Bridge following his stint with Ipswich Town.
Delap managed 12 goals in 40 outings for the Tractor Boys, who were relegated back to the Championship.
Despite being a £15 million signing from Manchester City, Delap’s performance hasn’t impressed everyone, Petit among them.
“Liam Delap has quality, I think he has done a great job at Ipswich, but it is a huge step,” Petit told PokerStrategy, as reported by Metro UK.
“He has a really bright future and I have respect for him, but going from Ipswich to Chelsea is huge in terms of expectation and pressure, that number nine position at Chelsea has been a curse for so many players.
“Chelsea need a striker who is going to score 25 goals a season, will Delap give you that? I’m not so sure.”
