Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, has highlighted the reasons behind his team’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, admitting that his players fell short of expectations during the encounter.
The Red Devils suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to their Premier League counterparts in Bilbao, with Brennan Johnson capitalizing on a defensive lapse to net the decisive goal in the first half.
Despite United’s efforts to mount a comeback after the break, they were unable to breach Spurs’ defense.
The loss marks a clean sweep for Ange Postecoglou’s team, who have now beaten United in all four encounters this season.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Amorim said, “I was always really honest with you guys.
“We did not perform well today but we were better than the opponent.
“In the second half we tried everything with the centre defenders players wide, crosses, going inside the box.
“I think today was not the day. We were not perfect, we have a lot to improve but I am always honest with you guys.”
The defeat brings a disappointing end to United’s European campaign under Amorim, who now faces the challenge of regrouping his team ahead of next season.
