Barcelona must work harder to win trophies next season – Flick

Barcelona head coach, Hansi Flick, reflected on the team’s achievements this season, hinting that even more effort may be required to secure trophies next year after their final home game of the 2024-25 campaign on Sunday.

Despite a 3-2 loss to Villarreal, the match was a celebration as Barcelona had already clinched the LaLiga title and were handed the trophy after the game.

In addition to the league triumph, Flick’s squad also defeated Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final and lifted the 2025 Spanish Super Cup.

“Next season we may have to work even harder to win titles. It’s not about perfection, it’s about evolution,” Flick told DAZN.

He praised the players’ hard work and their connection with the supporters throughout the season.

“The players have done an extraordinary job and deserve a day like this. I’ve told the players they deserve this celebration. You can feel the connection with the fans all season, and the way the team plays has helped foster this connection. The party was incredible, and for me as a German, it was incredible.”

The campaign hadn’t always looked so promising. Back in December, a 2-1 home defeat to title contenders Atletico Madrid, sealed by Alexander Sorloth’s 96th-minute winner, saw Atletico briefly top the table.

Flick believes that loss was crucial as a moment to reassess and focus on areas for improvement.

“We saw a lot of potential in the team and thought we could improve things, and the players have shown how good they are with the ball. As a player or as a human being, when you have confidence, anything is possible,” he explained.

He added, “In every training session, you see what they like to improve, and for me, the most important game was the one against Atletico. We lost, but we played very well, and here we’re starting to shake off that November slump. It helped us keep believing. De Jong returned, Gavi returned, we improved, and now we can celebrate.”

This LaLiga title marks the 28th in Barcelona’s history, while their Copa del Rey victory is the club’s 32nd.
