Two suspected members of an armed gang met their end on Wednesday following a failed attempt to overrun a security checkpoint in Isuofia, a town in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Isuofia is notably the hometown of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
In a statement released by the state police command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that while the security forces neutralized two of the attackers, a police officer also lost his life in the confrontation, and a patrol vehicle was set ablaze during the clash.
Ikenga explained, “One of the Anambra Joint Security Team in the late evening of 15th May 2025 resisted an attack by armed criminals at the Security checkpoint in Isuofia.
“Two of the armed hoodlums were neutralized in the process. Regrettably, one of the security operatives was fatally wounded, while one of the security operational vehicles was burnt by the bandits.
“During the ensuing gun battle and due to the superior fire of the Joint security team, the criminals abandoned one of their operational vehicles, a Toyota Sienna and fled the scene.”
The police spokesperson further noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Orutugu, has vowed to track down those responsible for the attack, describing the incident as a challenge to the unity and determination of the people of Anambra and the security agencies to rid the state of criminal threats.
He added that normalcy has been restored in Isuofia, with additional armed personnel deployed and ongoing operations in surrounding forests aimed at capturing the fleeing assailants.
