Govs meets in Abuja to discuss minimum wage, LG autonomy

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum is holding an emergency meeting in Abuja, bringing together 36 state governors to discuss the proposed minimum wage and local government autonomy.

This gathering follows the Federal Executive Council’s decision to postpone a decision on the minimum wage issue on Tuesday.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to engage in further consultations with the governors and the private sector before making a decision on the new minimum wage, according to Daily Post.

The governors had previously rejected the federal government’s proposal of N62,000, citing concerns that some states would need to borrow funds to pay salaries if implemented.

Organised labour, on the other hand, is pushing for a minimum wage of N250,000.

The meeting aims to find a consensus on the minimum wage and address concerns around local government autonomy.

The outcome of this meeting may have significant implications for the country’s economic and political landscape.
