You won’t regret, Tinubu assures Fubara over Rivers peace deal

President Bola Tinubu has assured Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara that he will not regret embracing the peace deal aimed at resolving the prolonged political crisis in the state.

Tinubu gave the assurance on Saturday during the All Progressives Congress 2027 presidential campaign rally in Rivers State, where he commended the governor for accepting reconciliation and maintaining peace.

The political crisis, which erupted in October 2023, followed a disagreement between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, over control of the state’s political structures.

The dispute deepened divisions in the Rivers State House of Assembly, triggered impeachment moves against the governor and eventually led to President Tinubu declaring a state of emergency in March 2025. Fubara, his deputy and members of the state assembly were suspended for six months before democratic governance was restored in September 2025.

Despite earlier reconciliation efforts, tensions persisted between the two political camps until renewed interventions and negotiations led to another peace arrangement in 2026.

As part of the latest reconciliation, Fubara returned to the political fold associated with Wike and joined the Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at Saturday’s rally, Tinubu praised Fubara for demonstrating maturity, understanding and respect for the intervention of elders, describing the disagreement as a misunderstanding within the political family.

The President acknowledged the governor’s decision to accept the intervention and prioritise peace, assuring him that his actions would not be regretted.

Addressing Fubara, Tinubu said, “To me, I intervened on your behalf. Similarly, to Fubara, Your Excellency, the host governor of today, I want to thank you specifically for maturity, understanding, respect for the wisdom of elders.

“When we intervened, you respected our position. You maintained peace. You are a committed democrat, Fubara. You will not regret what you have done as long as all of us are alive,” Tinubu said.

The President also thanked Nigerian youths for their contributions to maintaining peace in Rivers State, urging them to sustain their commitment to stability.
