The All Progressives Congress has elected Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura as its candidate for the Zamfara North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ya’u emerged victorious in the fresh primary conducted on Monday, polling 49,176 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Tijjani Yahaya Kaura, who garnered 9,628 votes.
Abdullahi Sani Shinkafi finished third with 6,206 votes.
The Chairman of the APC Zamfara North Senatorial District Primary Election Committee, Dr Auwal Aliyu, announced the results, stating that the exercise complied with the party’s electoral guidelines and relevant laws.
Declaring the winner, Aliyu said, “Having satisfied the requirements of the law and the APC primary election guidelines, I, Dr Auwal Abdullahi, Chairman of the APC Zamfara North Senatorial District Primary Election Committee, hereby declare Sahabi Ya’u Kaura the winner of the primary election.”
The results showed that Ya’u secured victory across all four local government areas in the senatorial district.
He polled 21,689 votes in Kaura Namoda, 19,017 in Zurmi, 3,815 in Shinkafi and 4,655 in Birnin Magaji.
Tijjani Yahaya Kaura recorded 6,586 votes in Kaura Namoda, 280 in Zurmi, 2,087 in Shinkafi and 675 in Birnin Magaji.
Shinkafi received 150 votes in Kaura Namoda, 386 in Zurmi, 1,208 in Shinkafi and 858 in Birnin Magaji.
The fresh exercise followed a legal dispute over the party’s earlier senatorial primary, which Shinkafi had challenged in court over alleged irregularities.
The Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto subsequently upheld an order directing the APC to conduct another primary, paving the way for Monday’s election.
With the latest outcome, Ya’u has secured the APC’s nomination to contest the Zamfara North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
