World Cup: Tunisia confirm Lamouchi sacking after Sweden humiliation

Tunisia Football Federation has confirmed it has parted ways with head coach Sabri Lamouchi following the country’s heavy defeat in their opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Tunisia became the first side at the tournament to change coaches after Lamouchi was dismissed in the wake of a 5-1 loss to Sweden in their Group F opener.

The Tunisian Football Federation announced the decision in a statement shared on Instagram, also revealing plans for an interim replacement.

“An agreement has been officially reached to dismiss coach Sabri Lamouchi,” the federation said in a statement posted on Instagram. “Plans are under way to appoint Mondher Kebaier as the national team coach on an interim basis.”

Lamouchi, 54, had only taken charge in January but arrived at the tournament already under pressure after a poor run of results, including a 5-0 friendly defeat to Belgium in Brussels during preparations.

The Frenchman, who previously led Côte d’Ivoire at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he failed to guide the Elephants beyond the group stage, departs after a brief spell in charge of Tunisia.

Tunisia still have two Group F fixtures remaining and will aim to salvage their campaign under interim leadership.

They take on Japan on Saturday at the same venue in Guadalupe where they were heavily beaten by Sweden, before facing the Netherlands in Kansas City.
