The Federal Road Safety Corps has advised women traveling with their husbands to act as co-drivers rather than engaging in distractions such as applying powder, looking at mirrors, and adjusting headgears.
The Costain Unit Commander of FRSC in Lagos State, Chief Route Commander Victor Okelola, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen. According to him, women sitting in the front seat, observing the road, and cautioning their husbands while driving could help minimize road accidents.
“It has been observed that, most times, wives do not pay attention to the driving attitude of their husbands. They engage in making up and tying headgears in the car. Also, in this age of mobile phones, they tend to concentrate on their phones and not minding their surroundings,” he said.
Okelola urged wives to be more observant and warn their husbands against speeding and reckless driving. He emphasized that driving above 100km per hour was dangerous and called on motorists to obey traffic rules to ensure road safety.
The FRSC official also advised drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on trips. He listed overloading, excessive speeding, and driving without a license as major traffic offenses.
Okelola further stated that the minimum age requirement for driving is 18 years, while commercial drivers must be at least 26 years old. The maximum age limit for drivers, he noted, is 65 years.
He appealed to all road users to prioritize safety and adhere to regulations to prevent accidents.
