FRSC vows to enforce helmet use for motorcyclists on Ondo highways

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ondo State has reaffirmed its determination to apprehend and prosecute motorcyclists who ply highways without wearing crash helmets.

Speaking in Akure on Sunday, the State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, said the command had intensified efforts to clamp down on violators in a bid to reduce fatalities from motorcycle accidents.

“We have stepped up our enforcement to ensure that any motorcyclist found on the highway without a crash helmet will be arrested, their motorcycle impounded, and appropriate fines applied,” Ibitoye stated.

He explained that most fatal motorcycle crashes involved riders without helmets, often resulting in severe head and limb injuries.

“It is safer for motorcyclists to avoid highways completely,” he advised. “But if you must use them, wear a crash helmet and never compete with heavy vehicles. Don’t claim right of way as an exposed road user—allow vehicles to pass so you can stay alive.”

The commander also urged religious leaders, traditional rulers, and titleholders to set an example by prioritising safety over appearances.

“Do not say because you are a titleholder or a religious leader that you will only wear your turban or cap,” he cautioned.

“If you must ride, wear your helmet. If you don’t want to wear it, then take a car or public transport. Crashes don’t recognise religion, tradition, or titles—they only see a human being at risk.”

Ibitoye stressed that while penalties exist for offenders, the FRSC’s primary message is safety first.

“We are not just talking about fines; we are talking about lives. A helmet can be the difference between surviving an accident and losing your life,” he added.
