Ghana produced a resolute defensive performance to hold England to a 0-0 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L clash, keeping themselves firmly in contention for a place in the Round of 32.
The first half was defined more by determination than creativity, as Ghana successfully repelled sustained pressure from the Three Lions.
England’s clearest opening before the break came when Declan Rice sent a looping header over the bar.
England increased the tempo after the restart and nearly found a breakthrough through Elliot Anderson, whose close-range header was blocked.
Anthony Gordon then tested Benjamin Asare with a powerful effort, but the Ghana goalkeeper stood his ground. Harry Kane also tried his luck with a low strike, only to be denied by another fine save from Asare.
Ghana remained dangerous on the counterattack and came closest to scoring in the closing stages.
Abdul Fatawu raced through on goal with less than ten minutes remaining, but after Ezri Konsa recovered to block his initial shot, Antoine Semenyo inadvertently prevented the rebound from crossing the line.
England’s best opportunity arrived in the 87th minute. Reece James delivered a cross that found Nico O’Reilly at the far post, but his header crashed against the crossbar.
The rebound fell kindly to Kane, who fired over the bar and squandered the final chance of the match.
The draw leaves England and Ghana occupying the top two positions in Group L heading into the final round of fixtures. England face Panama, while Ghana take on Croatia, with a point enough for both teams to secure progression to the knockout stage.
England’s tendency for goalless group-stage draws at the World Cup continued, having also recorded 0-0 results against Algeria in 2010, Costa Rica in 2014 and the United States in 2022.
