W’Cup: Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties, face Argentina in quarter-finals

Switzerland edged Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after 120 minutes ended goalless on Tuesday, securing a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup where they will face defending champions Argentina.

The evenly contested Round of 16 encounter in Vancouver, the final knockout match staged outside the United States, produced few clear-cut opportunities before being decided from the penalty spot.

After both sides failed to find a breakthrough in regulation and extra time, the shootout proved decisive.

Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as the hero by saving Cucho Hernandez’s penalty before Ruben Vargas calmly converted the winning kick.

Colombia, buoyed by a vocal travelling support, entered the match having conceded only one goal in four tournament games, while Switzerland had also built a reputation for defensive solidity.

The South Americans created the first real chance in the 21st minute when Gustavo Puerta unleashed a curling strike from outside the box, but Kobel produced an outstanding save to tip the effort away.

Switzerland responded strongly after the first cooling break. Camilo Vargas denied Fabian Rieder before making another important stop to keep out Dan Ndoye as the Swiss increased the pressure.

Despite those opportunities, neither side could break the deadlock before the interval.

Switzerland began the second half brightly, but Colombia threatened on the counter, with Luis Suarez firing wide from a promising position.

Several substitutions by both managers failed to inject the creativity needed to unlock either defence, while Colombian star Luis Diaz was effectively contained throughout the contest.

Ndoye nearly snatched victory deep into stoppage time, sending a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but no teammate was able to apply the finishing touch, sending the match into extra time.

The additional 30 minutes finally brought sustained attacking action. Jhon Lucumi struck the crossbar with a header from a corner before Kobel denied Jaminton Campaz with another fine save as Colombia stepped up the intensity.

Switzerland also came close when substitute Zeki Amdouni tested Camilo Vargas, who reacted well to keep the scores level.

Campaz then squandered Colombia’s best chance of the evening, failing to convert a gilt-edged opportunity with only minutes remaining.

With neither side able to find the decisive goal, penalties were required, where Switzerland held their nerve to prevail 4-3.

The Swiss will now take on Argentina in Saturday’s quarterfinal in Kansas City after Lionel Messi inspired the defending champions to a 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt.

Switzerland’s qualification marks their first appearance in the World Cup quarterfinals since hosting the tournament in 1954.
