US shuts Abuja Embassy over protest concerns

The United States Mission in Nigeria has temporarily closed its embassy in Abuja for routine services over security concerns linked to possible protests in the Federal Capital Territory.

In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, the mission announced that the embassy would remain closed until Monday, March 9, 2026.

The mission explained that the decision was taken as a precaution due to the likelihood of demonstrations in Abuja.

“Due to the potential for protests in Abuja, the U.S. Embassy will be closed for routine business until Monday, March 9, 2026,” the statement read.

According to the embassy, visa appointments scheduled for March 4 and March 5, as well as American Citizen Services (ACS) appointments slated for March 5, have been moved to new dates next week.

“Visa applicants should check their email or AVITS account for the new appointment date, while ACS applicants are advised to check their email for further information regarding rescheduling,” the mission stated.

The embassy also advised applicants who do not receive a new appointment notification to seek assistance through the Visa Navigator platform.

The development comes amid heightened security presence in Abuja following concerns about possible demonstrations by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.
