US issues security alert to citizens in Nigeria over Iran conflict

The United States government has warned its citizens in Nigeria and other parts of the world to heighten their security awareness following escalating military tensions between Washington and Tehran.

In a security advisory released on Monday, U.S. authorities urged Americans abroad to remain vigilant after the launch of American combat operations targeting Iran.

“Following the commencement of U.S. combat operations in Iran, U.S. citizens worldwide — particularly those in the Middle East — are advised to carefully review and adhere to guidance issued by their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the statement said.

The advisory indicated that the unfolding crisis could result in sudden travel disruptions, including temporary airspace closures across affected regions.

The U.S. Department of State called on Americans to exercise increased caution and take proactive steps to stay informed.

It encouraged citizens to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive real-time updates and to monitor official communication channels, including its dedicated security updates platform.

The alert comes amid reports from Iranian state media confirming the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following coordinated airstrikes allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel.

Several senior Iranian officials were also reported killed in the strikes.

In response, Iran has reportedly fired multiple missiles at U.S. military installations in Gulf countries, including targets in Saudi Arabia, pledging retaliation over the killing of its top leadership.

Speaking during a live broadcast on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump defended the military action, stating that his administration was determined to dismantle elements of the Iranian regime.

“We are committed to eliminating threats posed by the Iranian leadership,” Trump said during the address. He further called on the Iranian people to “take control of their government” once military operations conclude.
