The United States has reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, describing the deal as part of efforts to deepen security cooperation between both countries.
The US Mission in Nigeria disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Tuesday, saying the proposed acquisition would help strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities and address existing and emerging security threats.
The Mission said, “U.S.-Nigeria security cooperation continues to advance our shared efforts to strengthen regional security.
“The planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper helicopters underscores both countries’ commitment to building Nigeria’s defence capabilities and addressing current and emerging threats together.”
It added that Washington valued its continued security partnership with Nigeria in advancing peace, security and stability across the region.
“The United States values continued cooperation with Nigeria in support of peace, security, and stability,” the post added.
The proposed acquisition is part of the wider defence relationship between Nigeria and the US, which has involved military equipment, training and other programmes aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to tackle terrorism and other security challenges.
In April 2022, the US State Department approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Nigeria involving 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters and related equipment, with an estimated value of $997m.
The package included 28 T700-GE-401C engines, 2,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System guidance sections, as well as logistics support and training.
According to the US, the proposed sale was designed to enhance Nigeria’s capacity to support shared security objectives, promote regional stability and improve interoperability with the US and other Western partners.
The helicopter deal followed the earlier US sale of 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to Nigeria for $497m in 2017.
The US State Department also said Nigeria made its first payment for the 12 AH-1Z helicopters in August 2023.
