Unity Cup: Zimbabwe beat India 1-0 to secure third place

Zimbabwe defeated India 1-0 in the Unity Cup 2026 third-place playoff at The Valley, London, on Saturday, with a first-half penalty from Prince Dube deciding the contest and handing the African side third place in the four-nation tournament.

India were left to rue missed chances after falling behind in the 33rd minute when a mistimed challenge by Farukh Choudhary inside the box allowed Dube to convert calmly from the penalty spot beyond goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

The Unity Cup featured only four teams and began at the semi-final stage. India national football team had earlier lost 2-0 to Jamaica, while Zimbabwe national football team were beaten by Nigeria by the same scoreline, setting up the third-place clash.

India, coached by Khalid Jamil, were without injured winger Ryan Williams and handed a start to Vikram Pratap Singh, who looked lively in attack during the first half.

One of India’s best openings came when Ricky Shabong released a long ball for Vikram to chase, but Zimbabwe captain Gerald Takwara read the danger well to intervene.

Zimbabwe, ranked 130th in the world, struck shortly after to take control of the match. India nearly responded before the break, but Gurpreet Singh Sandhu produced a sharp save to deny Mongameli Tshuma and keep the scoreline at 1-0.

After the restart, India pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with Lallianzuala Chhangte coming close when his curling effort from the edge of the box, set up by Vikram Pratap Singh, was tipped onto the post by the Zimbabwe goalkeeper.

In the closing stages, Macarton Nickson missed a golden opportunity to level the score when his header from Akash Mishra’s cross went narrowly wide.

Despite late pressure and attacking substitutions, Zimbabwe held firm to secure victory and finish third, while India ended the tournament in fourth place.
