Unity Cup: Dimeji Lawal hails Super Eagles after Zimbabwe win

Former Nigerian international, Dimeji Lawal, has lauded the Super Eagles’ 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup, praising both the result and the emergence of new talent under coach Eric Chelle.

The win was powered by an outstanding debut performance from Millwall forward Femi Azeez, who scored twice to send Nigeria into the final of the competition in convincing fashion.

Azeez made an immediate impact on his first appearance for the Super Eagles, opening the scoring with a composed finish before adding a second goal later in the match to complete a memorable brace.

His display not only secured victory but also strengthened his growing reputation following an impressive season in the English Championship with Millwall.

Reacting to the performance, Lawal said he was encouraged by the depth of quality in the squad, noting that even with some key players absent, the team still delivered a strong and disciplined performance.

He highlighted the importance of the clean sheet and pointed out that previous meetings with Zimbabwe had ended in draws, making the win a sign of progress in the team’s rebuilding phase.

“I am really impressed with the Super Eagles’ victory over Zimbabwe despite not fielding some of the key players,” Lawal said. “It’s a performance that any coach would be happy with, especially keeping a clean sheet. The last time we played Zimbabwe, both legs ended 1-1.

“So for me, the rebuilding process has started, going by the two goals scored from Azeez.”

The Super Eagles now shift focus to the Unity Cup final, boosted by Azeez’s breakout debut, as they await the winner of the semi-final clash between India and Jamaica.
