The University of Calabar has suspended nine students for alleged involvement in examination malpractice and submission of forged academic results.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the institution’s Registrar, Chukwuka Icha, following deliberations at the university’s 252nd Senate meeting.
According to Icha, the action was taken after the Senate reviewed reports presented by the Ad-Hoc Senate Committee on Examination Malpractice and the Senate Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
“After a careful consideration of the findings and recommendations submitted by the relevant committees, the Senate resolved that the affected students be suspended for two academic sessions,” he said. “The suspension takes effect from the 2024/2025 academic year.”
The registrar explained that five of the students were sanctioned for examination malpractice, while four others were found to have presented forged results to the university.
Those suspended for examination-related offences are Akwuba Enestina (300 Level, Pharmacy), Udom Iboro (300 Level, Pharmacy), Nwankwo Daniel (200 Level, Pharmacy), Ore Israel (500 Level, Pharmacy), and Chisom Ejafa (500 Level, Pharmacy).
The other students affected by the disciplinary action include Lazarus Ebogo from the Department of Home Economics, Ele Godwin of the Department of Zoology, Ofem Patrick of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, and Makailu Pamilo of the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies.
Icha noted that heads of departments, faculty deans and the Acting Chief Security Officer had been directed to enforce the suspension in full compliance with the Senate’s resolution.
