UK unveils measures to curb illegal employment

The United Kingdom government has announced tougher enforcement measures aimed at tackling illegal employment, including wider workplace inspections and stricter compliance obligations for employers.

In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the UK Home Office restated its commitment to a firm immigration enforcement approach, detailing new actions intended to prevent unauthorised work and ensure businesses are held accountable.

Under the updated measures, authorities plan to intensify compliance operations across various sectors, with more frequent on-site visits and enhanced verification checks at business premises.

Officials say the policy will reinforce existing right-to-work requirements, increase the removal of individuals found working illegally, and impose tougher penalties on companies that violate employment rules.

The government says the crackdown is part of broader efforts to strengthen immigration control amid growing political pressure to address illegal employment concerns in the labour market.

Current estimates suggest the UK hosts between 10 and 11 million foreign-born residents, accounting for about 17 per cent of the population.

While most are legally employed under work, study, family, or humanitarian visa routes, authorities maintain that a smaller number continue to work without authorisation.
