UK teenager freed from Dubai jail dies after London police chase

A British teenager who recently regained his freedom after being jailed in Dubai has tragically died in a car crash just three months after his release.

Marcus Fakana, 19, was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a truck in Tottenham, north London, in the early hours of Friday.

He was rushed to hospital with critical injuries but was later pronounced dead.

According to the Metropolitan Police, officers had briefly pursued the car before losing sight of it after a short 60-second chase.

The vehicle was subsequently found crashed into a truck, with significant damage to its rear end.

Fakana had made headlines earlier this year after being sentenced to a year in prison in Dubai for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. He was 18 at the time of the incident.

His case drew widespread attention and calls for leniency, leading to a royal pardon granted in July by Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Radha Stirling, his lawyer and founder of the advocacy group Detained in Dubai, described Marcus as a young man who had found new faith and purpose following his ordeal.

“Marcus was deeply grateful for the compassion shown to him by the British public,” Stirling said. “His time in prison had a profound effect on him—he turned to Christianity and prayer and was determined to rebuild his life positively.”

The case that led to his imprisonment began when the girl’s mother reported him to authorities after discovering messages between the two upon returning to the UK.

Reflecting on his short-lived freedom, Stirling added: “It’s heartbreaking that after spending most of this year in a Dubai jail, Marcus was only free for three months—between July 3 and October 3.”

Police have since charged 19-year-old Marwaan Mohamed Huseen, of Argyle Road, Tottenham, in connection with the fatal crash. He faces counts of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, and failing to stop.

Huseen appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Thursday, October 30.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that its Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have both been notified of the incident.
